Thanks for this! We’ve been learning about “ezer” in Staten Island as well. Thank you for encouraging us to exercise our brains, to dig deep and to consider the frame of reference we are viewing scripture through: “prescriptive” vs. “descriptive”. Praying for you both.

Wow! You two are a breath of fresh truth! I love how you examine and dig deep for the truth in the Bible and God‘s commands. My husband and I have been so honored to be able to be part of these classes and have loved each one of them! Once we are all equal and are thinking with love instead of pride God will heal our relationships! We love you two so very much!
Jesus came to fulfill all of the prophecies and to make all things (re) new. My own thinking (and what I have been taught) minimized or tried to explain away how He SHOWED us just that by His example. So refreshing to let Jesus be Jesus. May there be times of refreshing that follow…open my eyes to see, my ears to hear and my heart to understand. Thank you Lisa for loving Jesus the way that you do. Big hug!
Lisa and Steve, thank you for encouraging all of us to think critically as we strive to understand and live by the scriptures. It takes real courage to question long-held assumptions. Will you be posting more lessons? I really look forward to hearing more. Much love to you both.
Steve and Lisa – this is a very exciting and timely topic. I am eager to learn more from your experiences. I have always found you and Steve to walk closely to God and your lives to be inspiring.
It’s so good to hear from you! It’s so encouraging that we can keep on learning ang growing!

This is very encouraging! I have been a disciple for 18 years and to see and learn more about this topic is amazing. However Not long ago I was reading Leviticus 27 and was very confused and actually sad that God himself put a different price tag on us. Men always had higher value. Can you elaborate please! Thank you!
Thank you for your encouragement. I’m sorry it’s taken so long to get back to you. It’s a good question. I view it like an insurance company’s estimated financial earning power considering vocation, etc. of a person in a court case. Women of some ages had a higher estimated earning power of men of different ages, based primarily on the society at that time. I definitely do not believe that God values men over women. Maybe this will help.
This is by Marg Mowczko:
“Leviticus 27:1-8 is sometimes understood as saying that men have more value than women, but the values given in this passage represent just one aspect of the worth of the various people listed: their strength of labour or economic value. Nothing more. Moreover, the labour value of a woman between the ages of 20-60 is thirty shekels of silver, which is more than that of males in all other age groups, except for men between ages of 20-60.”

When I visited the New York City church of Christ for the first time in the summer of 1984, what impressed me most about the church was not just the singing which was amazing, or the warmth and the love one felt within the assembly, it wasn’t even the handsome Haitian man that was in the church at the time (Jean Marie Poisson – LOL) it was something that Steve said in his message that day. He said that as a church they were committed to the scriptures and if at any point there was something in their belief or practice that was inconsistent with the Bible, they would embrace God’s word. I was so comforted by that idea and have held that as a conviction throughout my Christian life.
The more I study my bible the more some of our long held beliefs are challenged by the scriptures. Women’s role has been one of those ideas that I have been grappling with. This past year I have spent many hours digging into the scriptures and reading an abundance of books on the topic. Like you I keep going back to God’s intention in the Garden of Eden.
I thank you so much for your commitment to the word and the courage you and Steve have always shown in tackling sensitive or controversial topics. I look forward to hearing more of your teaching on the subject and will contact you about something specific.
Love Nadia
I feel profoundly relieved that you have undertaken this challenge of truth seeking and perspective in a way that moves the church forward. This lesson made my eyes sweat. You put words to the angst I have been feeling about Genesis for a long time.
I already know Jesus as my hero in a patriarchical world, not that I wish to rule over man, but I want women’s multifaceted strengths not to be marginalized. Much love to you and Steve.
Thank you both! I am excited to continue on to the next lessons and research, meditate, pray and share what I learn. You both have had the courage to love The Word deeply enough to see his truths—-and as mother of three adult daughters I feel so grateful to hear what you are saying as I believe they will as well!
( …and thank you Lisa for being an example to me and many, many women.)
As a disciple of over 25 years, my hearts desire has always been to follow and please God. Though I always felt much of Paul’s teachings seemed anti-woman – I reconciled it in my heart that there must be a reason, or I just didn’t get the context? But through the years, always felt an uneasiness – a sense that there was more to the story. After studying and reading and listening to these studies over the last three years with you, a freedom in Christ has crystallized and I now understand the fullness in Christ I am called to. Thank you for being fearless in your response to God’s call.
Thank you for sharing in such a thoughtful way on this very important subject. And thank you for being an example of humility and profound love for God’s word.
As time marches on I am more and more grateful for that which does not change like shifting sands and humbled by the discoveries that we can continue to make.
Press on and I look forward to hearing more from your studies.

Thank you for being so encouraging! Yes, we need to dig deep! And not be afraid of what we’ll find…
Thank you Lisa!
????
Great stuff. Great teaching. Descriptive is “Cause and effect”. A new righteous ( right-use) “cause” will have different “effect”. Thank you.
Thank you!
